Ever since The Enlightenment, and possibly even before that, researchers have attempted to understand the chronology of the world around us, to figure out precisely when each stage in our geological, biological and cultural evolution took place. Even when the only science we had to go on was religious literature and the western world believed the world was created in BC 1 , scholars tried to figure out when each biblical event took place, to define a chronology from savagery to civilization, from creation to the first animal, then to the emergence of the first people.
The pre-enlightenment understanding of our geological and cultural history may now be proven wrong and subject to ridicule, but the principles of defining our place in time in the cosmos underpin many sciences. For those researchers working in the field of human history, the chronology of events remains a major element of reflection. Archaeologists have access to various techniques for dating archaeological sites or the objects found on those sites. There are two main categories of dating methods in archaeology : indirect or relative dating and absolute dating.
Relative dating includes methods that rely on the analysis of comparative data or the context eg, geological, regional, cultural in which the object one wishes to date is found. This approach helps to order events chronologically but it does not provide the absolute age of an object expressed in years. Relative dating includes different techniques, but the most commonly used are soil stratigraphy analysis and typology.
On the other hand, absolute dating includes all methods that provide figures about the real estimated age of archaeological objects or occupations. These methods usually analyze physicochemical transformation phenomena whose rate are known or can be estimated relatively well. This is the only type of techniques that can help clarifying the actual age of an object.

But while the difficulties of single life may be intractable, the challenge of determining the age of prehistoric artifacts and fossils is greatly aided by measuring certain radioactive isotopes. The dating of remains is essential in archaeology, in order to place finds in correct relation to one another, and to understand what was present in the experience of any human being at a given time and place. Inscribed objects sometimes bear an explicit date, or preserve the name of a dated individual. In such cases, dating might seem easy. However, only a small number of objects are datable by inscriptions, and there are many specific problems with Egyptian chronology, so that even inscribed objects are rarely datable in absolute terms.
In the archaeology of part-literate societies, dating may be said to operate on two levels: the absolute exactness found in political history or ‘history event-by-event’, and the less precise or relative chronology, as found in social and economic history, where life can be seen to change with less precision over time. The contrast might also be drawn between two ‘dimensions’, the historical, and the archaeological, corresponding roughly to the short-term and long-term history envisaged by Fernand Braudel.
On the one level, events and individuals are placed in an absolute chronology: the exact years and sometimes even months and days of the events and biographies are known. On the other level, the exact years may not be known, but it is known that one feature is earlier or later in relation to another; this is typically the case on an excavation, where the different archaeological strata allow objects found to be placed in a relative historical framework.
For a long period in the 20th century Egyptian and Near Eastern chronology seemed to be the earliest of absolute chronologies, and imports from these areas were used to reconstruct the chronology of European prehistory. With the introduction of objective quantifiable methods such as dendrochronology and Carbon dating, over the past half century, European and North American archaeology have developed independent and more reliable chronologies, that often make it possible to date more precisely than in Egypt.
Artefacts often have a distinctive style or design, which developed over a period of time. In archaeology, the gradual changes in motifs were exploited systematically as a dating method by researchers from Montelius onwards. In Egyptology the method was first used by Petrie for dating the Naqada period, from the development of the so-called wavy-handled pottery. At least some objects belonging to such a typology should be datable by other criteria to fix a typology into a chronological framework.

Chronological dating , or simply dating , is the process of attributing to an object or event a date in the past, allowing such object or event to be located in a previously established chronology. While typological dating has been practised for over a century, it is more difficult with pre-Roman pottery, where different types are often less distinctive and there are no coins or historical records to help contextualise them.
Previously, radiocarbon analysis could help to date pottery finds only indirectly, by establishing the age of bones or other organic materials buried with them, but the new method allows for dating of the pots themselves using fatty acids from food residues — perhaps from milk or cheese — which have been absorbed by their porous clay during cooking. Other sources of carbon associated with pottery, such as the organic temper which occasionally survives firing, or superficial food crusts, were also considered for radiocarbon dating, but these are rare and prone to contamination.
The absorbed food residues proved to be by far the best option, as they occur very commonly and often in high concentrations. How does the new process work? It begins with the selection of potsherds that have land-based animal fats present as the presence of residue from fish could affect the results , after which a concentration of fatty acid esters is obtained from each sample, and preparative capillary gas chromatography pcGC is used to isolate individual compounds.

A team at the University of Bristol has developed a new method of dating pottery which is allowing archaeologists to date prehistoric finds from across the world with remarkable accuracy. The exciting new method, reported in detail today in the journal Nature , is now being used to date pottery from a range of key sites up to 8, years old in Britain, Europe and Africa.
Archaeological pottery has been used to date archaeological sites for more than a century, and from the Roman period onwards can offer quite precise dating. But further back in time, for example at the prehistoric sites of the earliest Neolithic farmers, accurate dating becomes more difficult because the kinds of pottery are often less distinctive and there are no coins or historical records to give context.
This is where radiocarbon dating, also known as 14C-dating, comes to the rescue. Until now, archaeologists had to radiocarbon date bones or other organic materials buried with the pots to understand their age. But the best and most accurate way to date pots would be to date them directly, which the University of Bristol team has now introduced by dating the fatty acids left behind from food preparation.
