It turns out Matthew E. White — and his studio in Richmond, Virginia — was the glue needed to bring them together, allowing them to forget the individual directions pulling at them and instead bring both sets of ideas before the in-house band for a cohesive compromise. To call it a struggle isn’t to undermine the process, sometimes it’s just a fact of life. Here, though, it went shamefully unrecognised, not troubling the charts nor picking up a Mercury Prize nomination. Their preoccupation with love and loss remained, while their fondness for classic pop flourished, with Motown and 70s singer-songwriter fare coming to the fore. Many of the songs on this LP are indeed rather unhurried, yet they feel purposeful and determined.

The band formed in when they were both still teenagers and spent the next two years touring relentlessly around the North of England. Initially categorized as anti-folk the album proved there was so much more to the band and their sound — sweet harmonious hooks, rockabilly beats and exuberant yelps and yips, all held together by some breath-taking harmonizing. Slow Club are defined by their own distinct and powerful partnership — Charles with bruised vocal, rasping guitar and disarming lightness of touch; Rebecca with her dash of Northern Soul and sharp wit, playing stand up drums.

Slow Club’s Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor have blossomed as artists over the course of three strong—and very different—albums.

Charles Watson and Rebecca Taylor are Slow Club. After four well-received albums and 10 years of touring, conflicting perspectives on success and Slow Club’s future have pushed the two apart. On sale date and times.

That’s not to say they don’t love it or love crafting it or refuse to play older songs at shows, no. However, in their short lifespan, this Sheffield duo have made notable changes to their sound from album to album, as the clap-and-stomp folk-rock of ‘s Yeah So is notably different from the irreverent, more fleshed-out full-band workouts that made ‘s great Paradise what it was. Perhaps even more impressive than their discography has been their incredibly notable videography as well, which has featured everything from impressive Daniel Radcliffe cameos to their viral “Two Cousins” concept , stunning in its simplicity but effective nonetheless.

Yet for Complete Surrender , Slow Club’s most serene effort to date, Watson and Taylor have run a whole gamut of notable clips, ranging from the Kiss-loving video for “The Pieces” to the black-and-white fantasia they crafted for the album’s title track to the boxing flim cilche-puncher for “Suffering You, Suffering Me”. Even with these visually dynamic videos peppering their YouTube page, the truth is that without ever going to extravagant, Complete Surrender sounds like the most concise album Watson and Taylor has yet made — but we can only wait in anticipation to see what left turn they throw at us after this.

To celebrate the album’s release, Taylor is now tackling PopMatters ‘ 20 Questions “I feel like you and I are sat in a hot tub and you really want to get to know me”, she tells us , and here reveals that everyone seems to think Frances Ha is about her, what it will take for her to be attractive to Henry the Eighth, and that the soundtrack to Sister Act 2 just may be the greatest album ever made

But the self-centredness to which she refers is not to do with hogging vocals on stage they both sing , or one of them steering the songwriting they both contribute. She’s explaining the duo’s decision to play mostly new tracks from their upcoming record, Complete Surrender, when they perform next weekend at Latitude Festival. It’s our first main-stage appearance, too, so it should be amazing. And why wouldn’t they want to focus on new material?

Their third album, out on Monday, marks another change of direction for the Sheffield-formed band, who now call London home. After the jangly, cutesy folk-pop of their debut, Yeah So the video for their first single, “Because We’re Dead”, actually spelled the band’s name out in cupcakes , came the acclaimed – and more experimental – Paradise in

Some people see putting the tree up as the start the Christmas period. Others wait until they’ve seen the traditional Coca Cola advert on the TV. But it’s not really Christmas until you’ve seen Slow Club, is it? Their annual shows around this time have become a regular trip for many – owing much to their EP of “festive” tunes they released back when their career was still young.

The show is stripped back – just Charles and Rebecca playing guitars with the former occasionally switching over to a piano. They dive in and out of the set at times to allow the other to perform solo. It’s wonderfully intimate and the crowd settles into a hush for most of the gig. But everyone wants to see the Christmas tunes and the encore doesn’t disappoint in that regard. All Alone on Christmas and It’s Christmas and You’re Boring Me are played on stage before they both descend into the centre of the crowd.

The latter is my own personal favourite Christmas song. The crowd wakes up and sings back the closing words. Rebecca’s voice is so strong that it carries over everyone anyway. And now I can finally say Christmas is here. Same again next year, please.
